Cornelius Cardew (1936-1981) was probably the most inovative British composer of the 20th century. His work combines musical experimenation with social and political engagement. "The Great Learning" is a setting of seven texts ("paragraphs") by Confucius on the organisation of a harmonious society. It was composed between 1969 and 1971, as not just a description but an enactment of a democratic musical ideal through the Scratch Orchestra, a collective which attempted to erase differences between composers and performers, professional and amateur musicians, singers and players. This performance will consist of paragraphs 2, 3, 6 and 7, with a specially-formed group directed by Richard Barrett, a composer with long experience of Cardew's work who took part in the first complete performances of "The Great Learning" in London in 1984.
